HotelTonight – Old Town San Diego Hotels Are Ready

San Diego is one of those cities that I had seen several times but not really "seen" in terms of experiencing what it's like to visit here. I had been there several times for work, but that always basically confined me to downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter. Don't get me wrong, both of those areas are perfectly lovely and enjoyable, but for a long time I had wanted to see something more. The last time I was in town, a colleague told me that I had to make some time to visit Old Town. I wasn't able to do so, but I went a bit further instead. I extended my stay by a day so that I could explore this part of town for myself. I logged onto my favorite travel app in HotelTonight and found a hotel room in Old Town San Diego within a couple of minutes. I was going to see what all the buzz was about, and I was excited to do so.

The Ambience

I'd been in the unofficial old towns of other cities before, and frankly quite a few of them were just old and not all that attractive. That was definitely not the case with Old Town San Diego. The ambience was such that you almost felt like you were walking into a different era. The Spanish architecture was appealing, the palm trees lining the streets were gorgeous and some of older buildings such as the Whaley House were sights to behold. This seemed like a part of town that had been preserved properly.

The Shopping

I have to admit that when I travel to a new city, one of the things that helps me form my opinion of it is the quality of the shopping. In other old towns, in other cities, the shopping consisted of picking out some trinkets that you knew would not last. In Old Town San Diego, I walked through shops with authentic clothing and art pieces that were of the highest quality. This was not a tourist trap that I had come to half-expect given all of the visitors here. Instead, it was a pleasure picking out gifts for the important people in my life.

The Cuisine

Mexican food has exploded in popularity in recent years across the United States, so much so that the American influence has changed it in some places. That's not the case in Old Town San Diego. I went to a place on the main drag and before I knew it I had a basket of tortilla chips and homemade salsa in front of me, both of which were fresh and delicious. I had the taco plate for my dinner, and the tortillas were warm and chewy, the meat seasoned perfectly and all the fixin's were just right. It was a tremendous meal.
