HotelTonight – Roscoe Village Hotels Are Available

They do big things in Chicago. The buildings are enormous, their events are enormous and even the following of all of their sports teams are enormous. Chicago in my mind is the quintessential "big" city in that it doesn't do the "small-town" thing for the most part. I have been here many times, and I've always been impressed by the city's spirit and its way of life, as it meshes with mine quite comfortably. Recently, I booked a return flight from a work trip there for an extra day out so that I could explore a neighborhood that I had heard more and more about recently. It was called Roscoe Village, and I even heard the word "laid-back" used to describe it. I had to see this for myself, so that's what I was going to do with my extra day there. I wasn't worried about lodging, as I had the HotelTonight app on my phone and I was sure that I'd be able to find a Roscoe Village hotel room in seconds when I needed one.

The History

You really can't describe Roscoe Village accurately without going into its history. It was originally settled by European immigrants during the second half of the 19th Century, and given the time in history, it quickly developed into a bedroom community for the mills nearby. When the Great Depression hit, the area fell on hard times for approximately 40 years until developers began to invest in the area. Since then, Roscoe Village has been on a steady if not quick climb economically, and you can see that effect when you walk down these interesting streets.

The Feel

Of all the things I like about Chicago, one that I have never felt was as though I could have been somewhere in Europe at that time. That all changed when I spent time in Roscoe Village. There are no big businesses here, but mostly family-owned small shops, restaurants and the like. The streets are clean and the walkways are mostly pristine. Trees line the streets and families are seemingly everywhere enjoying themselves. It felt as though I could have been in some type of German village, and the people were all extremely happy and content, not to mention friendly.

The Old Stuff

I mentioned the shopping, but I didn't specifically mention the antique shopping. I don't know why and I didn't stand there and count the number out exactly, but there were oodles of antique stores in the area. I love looking around for antiques, so I was in my own little utopia for most of the afternoon. I went from shop to shop and found a few interesting pieces that I was excited to add to my own collection.
