HotelTonight – Milwaukee Airport Hotels

"Your flight has been canceled." Is it possible to hear anything worse than that as you travel between cities, whether you're on the move for business or pleasure? I travel all the time for work, and nothing grinds your gears of productivity to a halt faster than finding out you're going to be stuck at some midpoint for an undetermined amount of time. On my last trip through the Midwest, I heard those dreaded words from a gate agent. I could either stay in the terminal at the Milwaukee airport or could take a flight the next morning. I decided on the latter. I didn't want to sit in a seat and hope to somehow find my way onto a flight. I wanted to make the most of my time in a city that I had not seen much of to that point. I had been downtown and seen all of the main attractions of Brew City, but I hadn't ever done much in and around the airport. I opened my HotelTonight app and booked a Milwaukee airport hotel within a few minutes – it was just that easy. I checked in and started exploring the local area.

The History

A lot of airports in mid-sized cities these days are so far out of town that there's almost nothing to do anywhere within a reasonable distance. That's not the case in Milwaukee, as it's almost a neighborhood airport, given its proximity to the actual city. There are several little neighborhoods near General Mitchell Field, and I took a ride share through some of them on my way to a pub I had heard about. It was obvious that these neighborhoods by the airport had been in place almost as-is for generations, and that was a nice thing to see.

The Pubs

I'm not much of a drinker, but I enjoy viewing a city from the prism of what people tend to do when they gather. Milwaukee, particularly in the areas surrounding the airport, is one of those old-time Rust Belt cities where seemingly every neighborhood has its own pub. I visited a few of them throughout the course of the day, and it wasn't because I was imbibing. I instead found myself talking to people and taking photos of some of the most beautiful, old, wood-carved decor I had ever seen anywhere outside of the bier halls of Europe.

The Cuisine

When you're anywhere in Milwaukee, you're going to eat well. It's a big-time food city. I heard about a German place that served authentic offerings, so I went there. Not surprisingly, it looked like a hall that could have existed in Munich. I ordered the pork knuckle, their specialty. It was fantastic. The meat fell off the bone and the gravy made the whole thing work. I had a German beer with it and had a great time talking to other patrons about why this place was so special.

HotelTonight – Milwaukee Airport Hotels Just for You

I was tired and full, and I was ready to get some sleep. I ordered a ride and waited for only a few minutes before I was on my way back to my nice, comfortable room. As I fell asleep, I found myself grateful that an app like HotelTonight can turn a terrible day into a good one.
