HotelTonight – Williamsburg Brooklyn Hotels

The dichotomies you can find in New York City are nothing short of fascinating. They are everywhere and can arise in almost any context. That's how it goes when you have a city that's enormous and constantly growing and changing in different ways as New York has been doing for centuries. When you watch old movies now and see scenes from New York, it hardly looks like the same city you see when you spend time there now. That's especially true in Brooklyn, where things have changed rapidly in the past 20 years or so. What was once the quintessential example of old New York is now a melting pot of old and new. I recently traveled to New York for work, as I do regularly, and I wanted to spend 24 hours in a neighborhood that I heard was the best example of a changing Brooklyn. That neighborhood was Williamsburg. I hadn't been there before, but I was anxious to see what all the buzz was about. I also wasn't concerned about lodging, as my HotelTonight app would help me find a Williamsburg Brooklyn hotel room as soon as I was ready for some sleep.

The Architectural Transformation

It used to be that Williamsburg was home to enormous warehouses used for obvious industrial needs and rowhouses and apartment buildings used for the local workers to live in with their families. There were a few commercial buildings but not much else. That's not the case anymore. Many of the warehouses are still there, but they have been converted into lofts, studios or other things. There are also a lot of new residential buildings meant to accommodate the number of people moving into Brooklyn in general and Williamsburg in particular.

The Melting Pot

If you walked through Williamsburg in the 1970's or 1980's chances are that as you walked down the street you'd see large Italian families walking together, groups of Hasidic Jews enjoying the nice weather when it arose and perhaps people from the Caribbean. You still see people of those backgrounds in Williamsburg, but that has all changed in that they are now sharing space with countless young professionals and young artistic people who have flocked to this part of the city. Williamsburg is an easy commute to Manhattan and for a time the rent was not that expensive, which is why they have come.

The Cuisine

After walking around as much as I did and seeing all of the new things that had arrived in Williamsburg, I wanted to try something old if possible. I decided to check out an Italian restaurant that had been serving families for decades. I walked in and could tell that it had been there for a long time, as the checkered tablecloths were old but lovely. The marinara sauce that came with the pasta was sublime, and the staff even referred to it as gravy.
